This union role supports the Cleaning Room department by welding steel castings and performing arc welds of defects, fins, risers, and gates. The Steel Welder may provide training to new employees or welders who are working on gaining skills required to become a Steel Welder.

This is a full-time position, generally Monday through Friday, and may be day, swing, or graveyard shift. This position may require long hours and some weekend work.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Take castings preheated to 650F in and and out of the preheat ovens
  • Operate overhead crane via remote
  • Safely hook up and rig parts for transportation via overhead crane
  • Carbon Arc air gouge castings to a contour
  • Weld repair and/or fabricate castings with prescribed weld process
  • Perform magnet particle inspection of cracks in castings
  • Operate hand-held tools such as grinders
  • Check equipment for safety and function on a daily basis
  • Change wire and gas on equipment as required
  • Clean PAPR unit, and maintain that personal protective equipment is operational
  • Set an example of optimum performance in the absolute safest manner possible, and encourage safe working practices among co-employees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to weld with zero defects
  • Ability to perform carbon arc gouging and arc risers / gates to correct size and tolerance
  • Ability to use hand tools such as chisel guns and grinders with accuracy
  • Ability to pass a Vertical Up X-ray Weld Test
  • Know how to set-up a weld machine, and maintain equipment
  • Know how to operate remote and jib cranes

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Seven months to one year welding experience is preferred
  • Welding training (such as GMAW and FCAW)
  • Heavy industrial experience is preferred  
  • Work is indoors. Temperatures are typically 10 to 15 degrees warmer than outdoor temperatures. Environment is dusty and smoky at times. Work is very physical and performed while standing. Noise levels exceed 85 db. Personal Protective Equipment is required within production areas.
