Columbia Steel manufactures parts from 4lbs to 40,000 lbs in a broad variety of wear and heat resistant steel alloys and irons, fully heat treated and machined to the most exacting specifications. The Foundry Process Engineer is responsible for monitoring, controlling and improving production processes to enhance casting quality by reducing process variation. As a collective team, the Foundry Process Engineers comprises of Operations Technology (Quality and Metallurgy).


This is a position relying on utilization of broad Manufacturing Engineering principles. Duties include:

  • Ensure each process worked-with and developed is conducted in safest possible way
  • Study, identify and control process variables toward standardization and reduction in variation
  • Participate in, and at times lead, the Sample process to convert new and modified castings from engineering concept drawings to approved samples
  • Use engineering principles to investigate and develop robust:
    • steelmaking practices, refinement, development
    • pouring practices
    • gating/risering practices, with the assistance of modeling programs (e.g. Magmasoft)
    • molding practice
    • cleaning practices
    • welding practices (cleaning, repair, extend, value added)
    • Heat Treat practices
  • Perform metallurgical analysis on castings
  • Write, review, and follow process procedures for predicable outcomes
  • Study, specify and select sand and wash types to improve casting quality
  • Initiate and coordinate special projects as needed in support of the above and other Operations Technology projects, including but not limited to process changes, new equipment recommendations, enhanced alloy offerings, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the materials, equipment, processes and procedures used to produce castings
  • Knowledge of gating/risering practices for large steel castings
  • Ability to work with and interpret Magmasoft and other foundry process software at an elementary level or higher
  • Ability to solve problems with scientifically based Engineering principles
  • Knowledge of drawings and blueprints for the purpose of developing production methods
  • Ability to produce written reports suitable to describe problems and propose actions
  • Understanding of Solidworks, Magmasoft, and their application (i.e., flow, solidification, stress analyses) is helpful
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and AutoCad/SolidWorks
  • Desire to learn continually and stay abreast of new technology

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, Material Science, or Metallurgical Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent
  • Two+ years of experience in foundry production processes, including familiarity in green sand molding, floor and machine molding, mold rigging, pouring and cleaning is preferred

Job Conditions:Work conditions include a wide variety of environments including office, lab and shop floor. Working with foundry equipment, and lifting 50 to 100 lbs is typical. Will routinely bend, twist, kneel, walk, climb, and reach throughout the day. Will sit, stand, and walk for 1-10 hours per day. Working environment includes noise, fumes, dust, and inclement weather.
