This position is responsible for process costing, cost analytics and management reporting. This position maintains a high level of communication responsibility to ensure a continually improving business model.  Regular communications will be with personnel in IT, Accounting, Operations, Human Resources and Executive Management for the sake of full collaboration on needs and expectations.  This position leads in the spirit of Columbia Steel business philosophy of treating all employees and co-workers with honesty, fairness and respect.

This is an exempt, professional-technical position working generally Monday through Friday. This position may on occasion require longer hours and some weekend work. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Operational audits to assess proper allocations of costs
  • Maintain accurate raw material and supply inventory levels and balance between general ledger and system perpetual inventory (Stores)
  • Develop accounting and operational reports using Jet Professional software (or comparable MS-Excel add-on)
  • Develop and complete annual operating department cost and metric budgets
  • Create month end journal entries for inventory and departmental cost item adjustments
  • Verify manufacturing scrap (defective) analysis
  • IT project and report liaison for company departments and operations
  • Facilitator of IT project bi-weekly meetings
  • Responsible for actual/standard time analysis
  • Work closely with Operations to create/implement/maintain procedures for data collection
  • Key member of the Continuous Improvement Program Steering Committee and Accounting/Finance and main office facilitator.
  • Continuous Improvement project tracking and reporting
  • Capital expenditure project accounting and working with Facilities Engineering
  • Monthly Cycle counts on raw material and machine tooling inventory
  • Complete monthly departmental reports and facilitate monthly departmental cost meetings
  • Monthly departmental cost statement anomaly research
  • Prepare monthly cost anomaly and accounting reports for submission to management
  • Utility usage analysis
  • Adhoc training of personnel on MS-Excel
  • Specific projects and duties as assigned 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Organized & results driven with an engaging style to achieve department and business results
  • General report writing skills using Jet Professional preferred ( G/L , cost and operational analysis reporting)
  • Intermediate/Advanced MS-Excel skills
  • Ability to effectively influence others to achieve functional objectives
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in speaking & presenting in front of co-workers
  • Excellent overall verbal and written communication skills with ability to articulate facts
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate across multiple functional areas
  • Demonstrate the ability to investigate and lead projects
  • Systematic approach to reporting
  • Strong sense of curiosity coupled with personal responsibility and flexible demeanor
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines 

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's in Accounting or closely related field
  • At least 3 to 5 years' experience in manufacturing / cost accounting / cost tracking and validation
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of manufacturing operations and the complexities that go along with a diversity of product lines
  • CMA or CPA designation desired
  • Good understanding of GAAP
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting
  • Ability to learn business systems quickly 

Typical Work Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment as well as in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, voicemail, photocopiers, and productivity software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms; maneuver uneven floors in industrial environment.
